Winter arrives in UAE: NCM predicts rough weather from tomorrow
Sea conditions range from slight to rough in Arabian Gulf
DUBAI – The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) has issued a weather report covering the period from the evening of 12 December until 19 December.
According to the forecast, the UAE will experience unstable weather due to the extension of a surface low-pressure system accompanied by an upper-level low-pressure system.
These systems are expected to deepen and weaken intermittently, generating various cloud formations and a chance of scattered rainfall at intervals.
Winds and dust
The NCM noted that winds across the country will primarily be southeasterly to northeasterly, occasionally shifting northwesterly.
Speeds are expected to remain light to moderate, becoming active at times with clouds. The gusts may also lead to blowing dust over land areas, particularly in the interior regions.
Sea conditions
Mariners are advised that the Arabian Gulf will experience slight to moderate sea conditions, becoming rough occasionally, especially with cloud activity.
Meanwhile, the Sea of Oman is expected to remain slight to moderate. The NCM emphasised the need for caution while navigating, given the variable conditions.
Winter begins
The UAE has officially entered its winter season with the predawn appearance of Ikleel Al Aqrab, a bright trio of stars in the constellation Scorpius, as confirmed by Emirati astronomer Ibrahim Al Jarwan. The rising of Ikleel Al Aqrab from the eastern horizon marks the start of the Murbaaniya, the first phase of winter in the traditional Anwa’ and Tawali‘ calendar, which will continue until 7 March, ending with the rising of Saad Al Su’oud.
Ikleel Al Aqrab, located at the forefront of Scorpius and appearing as a crown of three luminous stars, signals the arrival of colder air masses. During winter, temperatures drop to their lowest levels, frost may form, and northern winds intensify. The chance of rainfall remains throughout the season, providing relief from dry spells in the region.
